1. CrossFit makes use of three different standards or models for evaluating and guiding fitness. Summarize all three.
First Standard Summary: There are ten recognized general physical skills. They are cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. They are catagorized by how they are improved – training, practice and adaptations of both training and practice.
Second Standard Summary: This is about the views that fitness is about performing well at every task imaginable. By practice, it encourages an athlete to improve sets, rest periods, reps, exercises and routines.
Third Standard Summary: There are three metabolic pathways that provide energy for the human body. The three are; phosphagen pathway, glycolytic pathway and oxidative pathway. They are divided by how much enegry they can provide you for the type of activity you are doing.
2. What is the difference between practice and training when it comes to overall fitness?
The differnce between training and practice when it comes to overall fitness comes down to the body and nervous system. Training refers to an activity that improves performance through a measurable organic change in the body. Where as practice refers to activity that improves performance through change in the nervous system.
3. After reading about CrossFit’s three models for evaluating and guiding fitness you should have a pretty good idea why they design the WODS the way they do. Combine the three and tell me what is CrossFit’s overall definition of fitness.
After thinking about the three standards and putting them together, my theory of CrossFit’s definition of fitness is that it’s totally insane but with effort and commitment, a great way to become healthier and more fit. They make their workouts in a way you are targeting many different physical skills all in one exercise. Their workouts train all three pathways because of how intense and long some of them make you work. It also gives you the metally tough gritt to want to perform your very best at your exercise because you’re not just competing agaisnt another person but agaisnt your body. The workouts put your body through pain and suffering but through training you mentally develop confidence in yourself to push though.
